HPSO Open Gardens Directory

You may have noticed that I haven't been very active in terms of posting to my journal for the last month. One of the things that has been keeping me hopping is a project I have been working on for the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO).

The HPSO is a fabulous group of enthusiastic gardeners. I am currently serving on the board of directors and chairing the Open Garden Committee. With my committee, we have been putting the final touches on the directory of open gardens which will be sent to HPSO members this month. The directory, published each spring, provides a listing of gardens that members open to other members. We have some truly wonderful gardens in Portland and the surrounding areas and this directory is your ticket through their garden gate. I find visiting gardens very stimulating and always walk away with ideas or inspiration for my own garden. According to members, the Open Gardens Program is among the most valued benefits of membership in HPSO. If you live in Oregon or southwestern Washington, love gardens and horticulture, and you're not currently a member, I highly recommend you check out HPSO. At $30, the annual membership fee is a bargain! In addition to the open gardens program, we regularly produce fabulous programs, put on the area's premier plant sale (coming up April 9-10) and more!

Upcoming Television Appearance

To see a demonstration of how I have treated my roses in the front garden, tune in to Mike Darcy's In the Garden on KATU Channel 2 at 9 am this Sunday (Mar 20th).

The photos below were taken today in my garden. They show how roses that are pegged in this way look shortly after receiving this treatment. Check back later (May/June) for an updated photo to see this same scene in full bloom. It's going to be a glorious show!

Notice the growth pattern of the new foliage - these will all produce flowers later in the season (click on the photo for a larger view).
